The Photograph starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield has hit theatres. It follows the estranged daughter (Issa Rae) of a famous photographer who falls in love with the journalist (Lakeith Stanfield) assigned to cover her late mother. I have seen it TWICE.

It is a classy love story that may leave you reflecting on your own growth and love. I’m excited for you to enjoy the film this weekend.  Without slipping in spoilers, I wanted to share a few positive things that stood out to me. Once you go see it – Come back and share your thoughts and feelings on this cute love story.

MUSIC CONNECTS LIFE’S MOMENTS

The music is on point. It is evident to me how music frames life’s moments. It’s even more beautiful when we can tell our own stories framed with the right soundtrack. I always tie certain songs to particular memories. Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, and Diana Ross graced the flashbacks as Lucky Daye and Ari Lennox bring you into the modern romance. Pardon to the lady next to me as I hummed and sang along with the transitional soundtrack. It was the music my parents introduced me to growing up blended with the new music I adore. This brought the story close to home. Even the jazz score, by Robert Glasper, tucked into the twist and turns of scenes touched your soul. The Robert Glasper soundtrack is available for purchase and streaming on Apple Music.

A SUEDE COUCH CAN FEEL LIKE A HUG

The costume and decor really stood out to me. The intentional peeps were hidden in every scene. I picked up on colors of Deep Teal, Sunkissed Yellow, Gold and Intense Navy popping up in scenes in various textures. Making appearances with a silk-wrapped emerald dress, a suede teal couch, a fluorescent blue glare of light peeking around the corner or even simple yellow flowers on the street. Let me know if you peep the colors throughout the film.

I’ve been told that these colors represent Healing, Joy, and Revelation. Somehow this made me happy inside noticing such details. They added an intense element of touch while complementing the storyline. The way the movie was shot, you can feel all the sophisticated vibes through the home decor, art, wardrobe, and music. Everyone’s homes were well decorated with walls of afro-centric art, bold colors and modern pieces.

A PHOTOGRAPH TURNED INTO A MIRROR

We inherit more than looks from our parents. When it comes down to it, as we grow older, we realize that our parents are HUMAN. They were our age once just trying to push through life. They did the best they could. The more we learn about our folks – the more we realize how much we have inherited from them. Way past looks, we inherit how we shuffle the deck, react to situations and triumph others. Mae (Issa Rae), her mother Christina, and even HER mother shared similar traits that laced through the generations.

REFRESHING TO SHOW LOVE WITHOUT TOXICITY

Actor, Lil Rel Howery, is a charming and humourous addition to the cast playing. In a press interview, he mentioned in a few interviews that pointed out how enjoyable it is to see people falling in love without the trauma and ill intent. Rel and his wife are a positive soundboard supporting Michael (Lakeith Stanfield)  in his journey by asking the right questions backed with love. The film is just good people falling in love with a few imperfect bumps in the road. They are surrounded by love and support. People actually giving genuine positive advice. A simplistic love story that makes you feel good.

While the movie is simple and uncomplicated, it feels like home. Beautiful people, living beautiful lives trying to create more beauty for the world through art and words. I really loved The Photograph. I would love to see it again. It will be added to my list of “Feel Good” movies to pull out on a cozy day at home. S/O to Will Packer for producing another great film for the people.

Head out this weekend to enjoy some positive love & affection.Lakeith-and-Issa-The-Photograph-Hero-1920x1080
