The Dewberry was a sigh of relief on sight. “Ma’am let us pamper you!”, was the first thing said to me when we arrived at The Dewberry. As the doorman assisted us with our luggage, I attempted to be “ independent” by choosing to carry my oversized purse. He persuaded me to hand over my bag while offering me a cold bottle of water. My answer is “ If you insist!”
From that moment, I knew I needed to allow myself to soak up this ravishing establishment I was stepping foot into.
I tell you – being a tourist in your hometown gives you a completely different perspective. I can see why folks fall in love with Charleston. Our weekend stay was impeccable. The Dewberry managed to keep a 5-star service flowing with smiling faces.
The Dewberry Digs
The hotel room was so dainty and comforting. It had classic southern charm without feeling stuffy. It was the details that tied the decor together to feel like you were staying in a guest room of a Meeting Street Mansion. The patterned armoire gave the room personality while the massive mirror on the wall made the room feel twice the size. The sitting area worked perfectly to wrap up some work and store shopping bags from King Street without getting in the way! My favorite part was the grand view of Marion Square and the gorgeous blue skies. I also have to add they have the softest hotel slippers I ever had! Exclamation Point. Period.
The Dewberry Grub
With all the current craziness, I never felt like service or quality was shortened. The in-house restaurant Henrietta’s was closed and the Living Room lounge had a limited menu. I have noticed some hotels have reduced their room service to paper bags and plastic to-go containers. Understandably, the hospitality industry if taking all necessary precautions. Room service was still an experience. We received our traditional tray of room service. I appreciated it. The valet also dropped you off anywhere in the city in the Dewberry Volvo house cars. I want to show gratitude to the valet and front desk; Christopher, Carly, Justin, and Suzanne were extremely helpful.
The Curtis Club is the Dewberry’s rooftop bar and restaurant that provides you with a 360 view of the city! You can see the whole Ravenel Bridge and most of downtown. The sight is magnificent at any time of day or night. The food and cocktails only complemented the view. The Jamaican beef patties were a spicy surprise with crisp edges! We ordered spiffy drinks like Tropical Itch which came with a literal back scratcher dipped into the curvaceous glass.
The Vibe
I savored taking the complimentary bikes for a ride early Sunday Morning! It was peaceful and relaxing to ride a route through residential streets swiftly spilling onto East Bay Street as restaurants begin to set up for brunch. I biked all the way to Waterfront Park. I made sure I swung by my favorite bakery, Saffron’s, to scoop a slice of the Chocolate Marquise cake. Don’t worry, the bike had baskets to carry the precious load!
The Spa was quaint and mellow. Every staff member was just as pleasant as the next. Stephen was my masseuse for my Replenishing & Relaxing massage. It was my first massage experience. The shallow hum of smooth music with the warm duvet and scent of lavender puts your mind at ease. I would’ve taken a nap in the spa if it was allowed.
Everything at the Dewberry was supreme!! Hats off to them providing fresh hospitality in the city of Charleston. They have transformed the Mendel River Federal Building into a five-star boutique hotel that nods to historic charleston while bringing in the modern and sophisticated edge of a world-class traveler!
