This MUST be what cinderella felt like when that glass slipper was the perfect fit!! I found the love I have been looking for all my life. Birria El Gordo of Marietta, GA had my glass slipper (quesatacos and consume´) in hand!
For MONTHS, I have been looking for these drool-worthy desirable tacos I always saw on my IG explore page. I learned it was an authentic Mexican dish called Birria Quesatacos and Consume. The quesatacos favor a quesadilla with the cheese and meat filling. Some places use cheese in place of a tortilla! Consume´is a beef stew made of dried chiles and herbs like cilantro onion, salsa, and lime juice. For the quesatacos, they dip the tortilla in the broth before assembling the tacos on the griddle!
I was big upset when allll the quesatacos and consume´ photos were always in Los Angles or Las Vegas. Juicy, cheesy tacos stacked atop of one another – being dipped and sopped up in a bowl of razzle soup. I could not find an authentic restaurant in my locale with it on the menu. I was starting to contemplate making them myself! Before falling into the pot trying to make my own at home, I found a Twitter thread of greedy foodies like myself chatting about the “tacos you dip in the soup.”
This led me straight to Birria El Gordo! I did my research and noticed their lines get hectic QUICK! I’m talking two HOUR waits for tacos! A pro must move like such so I mapped out my attack. We were hitting Atlanta for the weekend. I know I wanted to there as early to avoid an atrocious line! I even chatted with them on Facebook for any recommendations. Jr told me Sunday is their busiest day. He recommended coming before 11:30 because the lunch rush is insane.
Alright, so Boom! We left our hotel in the city at 8:15 to make the 24 min drive to Marietta. Tacos for breakfast isn’t ideal but I’ll do what I gotta do to scratch the experience off my list. We were 8th in line. We probably were at the establishment a whole hour. That was because 2 out of the first 8 people ordered large party orders. I got a little out of hand myself. We ordered six tacos each including beef, steak, cow tongue, cow head, and goat. No disrespect but I couldn’t tell the difference, they all tasted the same. I also had a mango Fresca while waiting on our order. So refreshing!
The quesatacos and consume´ were still warm when we got back to the hotel! I was so excited I didn’t get a properly loaded food photo! Whatever. Listen, the quesatacos are cute but the consume´ was the real star! It was deep, flavorful, and meaty! I drank the whole cup after a few taco dips. When grabbing the quesatacos you must top them off with the guac, onions, and cilantro, It’s the law. They filled me up quick! I don’t think I ate again until that night.
Hats off to Birria El Gordo as a family business that truly pivoted and rebranded during this health crisis. They saw what the people needed and brought the boom. They have stored away most tables to make room for safe social distance and shaded areas for their extended lines. There is even a DJ outside to entertain the afternoon lines. If you are ever in the area, go support this family business. We want to see our small business thrive and make it out of this crisis in a decent position! Catch them on Taco Tuesday or Friday – Sunday selling full menu until they run out!
