You ever hear a fresh new song and instantly get teleported to the clouds? Butterflies in my chest this morning while traveling through Surfaces’ discography. I bumped into their jazzy song “Sunday Best “ on Apple Music. It was the epitome of a VIBE. I took a gander at the rest of the album that single belonged to. Surfaces kept that same uplifting heart and optimism through every track. “Sunday Best” is from their 2019 album ” Where is The Light”. They have since dropped a 2020 album called, “Horizons”.
Surfaces’ is the indie duo is created by Colin Padalecki and Frank Forrest who met via SoundCloud while in college. We got Forrest on the vocals and Colin on the production. Forrest told Apple Music, “In the midst of all this, there really is a lot of good stuff happening around the world, and there are reasons every day to wake up and be proud of who you are and ready for the day, ready to take on new challenges.” That is a philosophy I rock with.
The name Surfaces represents the various layers in life. They aim to use music as a tool to surpass personal differences and be a pathway to brighter days. No matter if you are getting ready for the day, need an afternoon pick me up, or evening recovery – this album will lift your mood. Use what you got and get to where you are going!
My heart feels like it is smiling. The music picked me up and made me want to dance and put on my happy face. Surfaces’ is a duo making music from the beaches of Texas. The fuse of influences is evident in each track. There is retro pop blending with the calypso, drizzled with soul and accents of jazz. Their voice is reminiscent of Khalid’s who also hails from Texas. They site influences like Marvin Gaye, James Taylor, and Stevie Wonder. I would label their genre as ” Take it Lightly, Bro. ”
Their lyrics are clean, energetic, positive, and drifty. They drive you to another place where the ocean breeze is swift and the trees are shady. The skip button doesn’t exist on this playlist. It has been less than 24 hours and I can tell their albums will have a solid place in my music library. Surfaces have their own aesthetic. The cheerfulness of their production matches some of my favorite instrumentals used in my IGTV series. The seamless productions randomly surprise me with a saxophone solo, a guitar riff, or jazz piano.
They released their latest indie album, Horizons, in February. The opening track is simply a pop turned soulful instrumental that will make you move your feet. The title track is a slower side of their wave but it pulls at certain strings of your heart. The best part of their music is the buttery smooth essence, sing aloud worthy, and no questionable lyrics. My favorite tracks off Horizons is Dance with Nobody, Horizons, and Remedy.“ Even though the road got tough, they never found me switching lanes. Energy, Got Good Energy.”
I did you a favor and brought the album to you with Apple Music and Spotify. Make sure you also peep their previous new albums, Where The Light Is (2019) and Surf (2017). I’m a big advocate of a great playlist. Keep your ‘Sunny Side Up’ and have a great week! Circle back and tell me what you think of Surfaces!
